Spencer Rescue & Emergency Squad, Inc. has been providing high-quality, pre-hospital, emergency medical care to the residents of Spencer since July 14, 1959.
A group of local businessmen recognized the need for ambulance service and further recognized that budget constraints placed upon the Town might make it difficult to maintain such a service. As a result, they filed the necessary paperwork with the state and Spencer Rescue & Emergency Squad was the first private ambulance service to be incorporated within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Since our humble beginnings at 44 Maple Street in Spencer we have come a long way to being one of areas best providers of emergency medical care. Our first ambulance was a 1949 Cadillac hearse donated by Alfred Morin. It was completely refurbished by the members of the Rescue Squad and immediately put into service.
When we first began operations all members were volunteers and our annual cost of operations was just shy of $2,000. Today, we employ approximately 15 EMT-Basics and 20 EMT-Paramedics and our annual cost of operations is more than one million dollars.
In 2003 we moved into our new facility located a 6 Bixby Road in Spencer. We have come a long way since July 14, 1959 and there are many, many people who have contributed to our success throughout the years.
The original founders (Curtis W. Amidon, Alfred C. Morin, Emery A. Delongchamp, Richardson K. Prouty, Charles H. Meloche Jr., Charles H. Meloche, Evangeliste Gaudette, Howard E. Hurley and Anthony S. Lacaire) should be credited for having the foresight and commitment to establish such a valuable service for the community.
The residents of Spencer should be recognized for their enthusiastic support of our organization through the years. We are grateful to all of the volunteers and employees who have so graciously given of the time and made this organization so successful.
Lastly, our current Board of Directors (Patrick George, Arnie Arsenault, Al Morin, Jim Lovett, Jim Pervier, Anne Jette, Wendy Beauvais and Vinny Cloutier) should be recognized for continuing the efforts to keep this organization heading in the right direction for the next 50 years!
